Lizzie Karr, Musician and Dancer (Oakland, CA)

1. So what’s your story?

    • Age: 30
    • Hometown: Chatham, New Jersey
    • Current City of Residence: Oakland, California
    • Area of Expertise: Music and Dance
    • How did you get started? My mom taught me to play the flute when I was 8 and I took piano lessons. In high school I got jealous of all the boys in rock bands and eventually decided to start my own.

2. What helps to keep you motivated?

Other artists! Weird art. I have a lot of feelings.

3. When you’re creating, where do you get your inspiration?

Stories. I meet a lot of strange people and get myself into some funny situations. I've also dated a lot in the last 5 years. I'm pretty sure I have enough material to keep writing for the rest of my life.

4. What are some words that you live and work by?

Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.

5. Who are some of the artists you admire and respect?

Ani Difranco had a big influence when I was learning to play guitar and write lyrics. She's fearless. Stevie Wonder writes and plays with more love than anybody. The Black Keys are production geniuses. Sebastien Tellier is a new favorite. And Banks is currently on repeat most often when I'm driving to work.

6. When do you know you’re finished with a piece?

I stop being mad at it.

7. Any tips for other creatives in your area of expertise?

Just do it. You might suck for a while, it's ok.

8. Do you have any upcoming performances, shows, exhibits, releases, new products or publications we should check out?

The Lizzie Karr Band plays at Neck of the Woods SF on November 22nd. My second album, "Like it's Bad," drops in Spring 2015. The first single from the album is available here. And I've written two songs for Ayumi Perry's new album "Ayumi," which is slated for release in February 2015.

9. What’s the best way for people to contact you for hire or purchase any of your work or services?

My folk album "Bones" is currently available on iTunes and Amazon. Check me out at:
